About me

Dr. Dr. Talat Mahmood received his B.Sc & M.Sc. in Computer Sciences at the Technical University of Berlin (1981) and then worked at WZB-Social Science Research Center Berlin, a very prestigious and largest European think tank as Computer Scientist until 1990. During this period he headed the Department of Computer Sciences at his institute and took a central role in the international project

"The persistence of corporate profits - A comparison between six leading industrial nations" under the leadership of an international team of academics. In this context, Dr. Dr. Talat Mahmood finalized his research thesis ("The dynamics of profitability as a stochastic process - An empirical analysis of German and U.S. Firms" 1990), gaining his first PhD in industrial engineering. After gaining valuable research experience collaborating in a network of leading elite Universities and think tanks worldwide, he continued his academics research assignments as Senior Fellow at WZB, in 1991. He earned his second PhD in industrial economics from the Technical University of Berlin and the Humboldt University of Berlin with his thesis "Hazard rates, market structure and geography: The dynamic post-entry performance ofnewbusiness start-ups" (2000).

Until 2015, Dr. Dr. Talat Mahmood persued various research interests, including empirical industrial organization, applied econometrics, post entry performance of newly founded businesses,international migration, bilateral relations, democracy research and understanding Pakistan.

As a member of internationally renowned scholarly organizations, he presented his research finding at the following economic forums: American Economic Association, European Association for Research in Industrial Economics, Schumpeterian Society of US, Econometric Society, VDI-Society of German Engineers and Society of Social Politics, Germany. He also taught at several esteemed universities as an Industrial Economist/Applied Econometrician (Professor) and Social Scientist and has published papers in international peer-reviewed journals.

He was a member of the editorial board of WZB and wrote reports as well as book reviews for the following international journals: Small Business Economics, Managerial Decision Economics, Empirical Economics, Journal of Business Administration (ZfB-Germany), Journal of Econometrics, Journal of Economics and Management Strategy, Applied Stochastic Models and Business and Industry and EconomicLetters.

In addition to his professional commitments, he is a founding member of the Asia-Berlin-Forum Berlin (ABF e. V.), a platform, established in 1996, which promotes bilateral business, scientific and cultural relations between Germany and Asia-Pacific countries, including Pakistan. Presently, he is the memberof the executive board and has previously held the position of Acting and Vice President of AB (2014-2016). In recent years he has organized several conferences jointly with German think-tanks and has arranged high-level meetings between German parliamentarians, representatives of the German foreign office, German business associations and representatives from Pakistans' political and business community.

During the last twenty-five years, he has acquired a high profiled network with key contacts in both the German and Pakistani business and political sectors. Until 2016, he was the Chief Advisor to the Executive Board of PGBF (Pakistan German Business Forum-Karachi) and GPTi (German Pakistan Trade and Investment-Karachi), nowmerged and converted into GPCCI (German Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry). He held the position of Managing Director and Vice President of the German Pakistan Forum Germany, and was General Secretary of German Pakistan Society Berlin.

Since 2016, Dr. Dr. Talat Mahmood founded business start-up company in Berlin with a subsidiary in Pakistan and acts as CEO and Senior International Consultant. The company focuses on information technology, digitalization and connectivity of startups ecosystems. Other areas of interest are environmental technologies, such as renewable energies and water treatmenttechnologies. Recently, he has advised the Chief Minister of Balochistan in sustainable development projects. Presently, he is undertaking research on digitalization and an evaluation of Pakistani startups and ecosystem with a special focus on socio- economic development, growth and transformation.
